There is a counter to this though, and i believe it is growing and will be part of a new modern reformation within the church..... preterism or *past fulfillment* It is a theological perspective believing Jesus came back in 70 AD at the destruction of jerusalem and ending the Old Covenant and establishing the New Covenant. As his followers we are to be carrying out His purposes of love peace and righteousness in our lives in making the earth His kingdom.... NOT hiding and waiting to be *raptured away* as the world decays to nothing. Look up Don Preston on a google search he has a website and has written many books and articles which elaborate this view in much more solid detail. We occassionally attend some friends' church (Episcopalian), which is generally bullshit- and ickiness-free, but it's too far to drive to on a regular basis. It does feel the way church is supposed to feel (communion of saints), instead of a time of spiritual masturbation, as is so often present in more evangelical church circles. At any rate, good post! I think the rapture mentality has done a lot to screw up many Christian's ability to truly minister effectively, not to mention the sucky mentality and actions it tends to create on both a personal and ecological level, as you mentioned.
