Body Shots

August14

Oh, get your mind out of the gutter. I don’t mean *that* kind of body shots. (The very thought of tequila is oddly appealing and retch-inspiring simultaneously.) I’m talking about photos. Not even nekkie ones, just ones that show my entire (clothed) body all at once.

I added this shot to my match profile (the version there is dated: 8/12/06). I figured I might as well try my bestest to avoid another of these situations.

Thoughts?

Freddy joined us for this Saturday’s hike, and he said Joy and I put him to shame. I’m not so sure about THAT, but it’s a nice ego stroke. We’ll try our 14ers next year. Freddy’s doing another one THIS WEEK. For now, I’m satisfied with meeting up for a beer or three and a few games of pool.

The whole gang, left to right: Maya, Allison, Freddy, Joy, and Dominic.

Hmmm, beer and pool seem much easier and safer than hiking 14ers. I’m getting very tempted to spend my upcoming days off in the billiard hall instead of perilously clinging to mountain ledges. Besides, Allison and Joy now have me convinced that it’s not “real” hiking unless you have a baby strapped to your back.

BTW, apologies for not having a permalink to the posts on my site. My readership generally doesn’t expand much beyond my Mom and my Aunt Virginia.

    Hey Fred,
We can probably find a toddler for you to borrow if you need to feel that you’re “really hiking”

Maybe for the safety of myself and the toddler, I should start off with a watermelon or a pumpkin in my backpack, and if I can bring those back from the hike unharmed, then I could move on to actual children. Kinda like that exercise in high school where you care for an egg for a week to see how prepared you are for parenting.

Uh huh. Yeah, I’ll trust you with my child, Fred. Yeah, right.

    (pffffft!)

Yeah, but I’m actually GOOD at hiking. And beer.

Don’t sell yourself short. You’re also very good at picking great 80s music on the jukebox.

As for that watermelon, he was asking for it. Stupid bratty watermelons….

After a childhood of immersion in my family's religious tradition, I hit college and my first true experience with the question, "why?" Why did I believe as I did? If I thought about it, I had no idea. So, I spent the next ten years not thinking about it.

.

Once I hit 30, I began asking myself that question all over again. A few years later, I woke one day to realize that I simply didn't believe. For many reasons, I am a much happier (and more emotionally healthy) person having let go of god. There are still days that I wish god did exist. It would be a relief to relinquish responsibility to a greater power.

.

But, even better, I can see life for what it is, and work with reality. That's more powerful than any god could hope to be.
