The pool I used this time around was a “Birth Pool in Box” from Waterbirth International. We only got it partially filled, since I’d used part of our hot water capacity for a soak in the real tub just before I realized I should *probably* get dh to fill the birth pool. Oops. As you can see from the specs on WBI’s site, it’s plenty deep — and I found it to be fine, even as low as we filled it.

For a much, much cheaper option, what I used the first time around (and probably what your midwife is talking about) was the “fishy pool” kiddie pool. Do a quick google search for “fishy pool birth,” and you’ll find several options online for people who sell these. BUT — unless it’s the dead of winter, I wouldn’t spend more than $20-25 on one of them. For wintertime, I know I’ve seen them for $30, like on this site. For my daughter’s birth in 2004, I found one at the grocery store for $15! It’s not quite as deep or large as the BPIAB, but it’s obviously much, much cheaper/disposable.

What kind of pool is it that you used? My midwife mentioned having me get a baby pool, instead of renting a birthing tub, but I can’t get my head around the idea. It just seems like it would be very shallow?
